1. d4 d5 2. e4!? {I give the move e4 !? because this opening is under a
persistent cloud. -Ryan Ripley In practical play Black often tries to avoid
the Gambit with 2…e6, the French defence, or 2…c6, The Caro-Kann. The
French may be met by 3. Be3, the Alapin Gambit. -DR Thematic Game – This is
the starting position.}

2…e6 {Black goes for the French Defense}

3. Nc3 h6?! {Waste of development}

4. e5 a6?! {Double waste}

5. f4 Nc6 6. Be3 Bb4 7. Nf3 Nge7 8. Bd3 O-O 9.O-O f6 10. Ne2 fxe5 11. fxe5 Nf5 12. Bf2 Nce7 13. c3 {Both Black bishops are blocked in and so is the queen’s rook}

13…Ba5 14. Ng3 b5 15. Bc2 Bb6 16. Nxf5 Nxf5 17. Bxf5 Rxf5 18. Nh4 Rf7 19. Qg4 Qe7 20. Be3 g5 21. Rxf7 Qxf7 22. Rf1 Qe8 23. Bxg5!! {I can sac this piece without thought as Black is playing without three of his pieces.}

23…hxg5 24. Qxg5+ Kh7 25. Rf6 {And Black can not stop the mate.}

The BDG Strikes Again!

In Chess on January 30, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Up and coming Randel Eng is playing some strong chess these days. 16 years old he has been rated close to 2100, the young man is a formidable opponent. Playing two games of blitz against him last night, he simply out played me in the first game as I was crushed in the Nimzowitsch Defense. Turning the board around, it was a different story when I played the infamous Blackmar-Diemer Gambit and he slipped into one of it’s many traps:
